Remembering the Shipmates who perished as a result of the fire aboard the USS Oriskany operating in the Gulf of Tonkin in Southeast Asia. Before the fires were completely under control, 44 sailors had died (43 from asphyxiation and one from burns) and 156 had been injured.
At the Oriskany Memorial, located in Trinkaus Park, Oriskany, New York, the walkway and anchor are lined with the plaques of the men who lost their lives on October 26, 1966. As shown in the above photo, each plaque is decorated with the Stars and Stripes. Below are photos of the 44 plaques.
