On Thursday, June 19, 2025 at 7:00 pm, the Oriskany Museum will host a presentation by historian Bob Moore and museum curator Alexis Albright about Oriskany’s own Col. Gerrit Lansing, a veteran of Yorktown, who served under General Lafayette and then-Lt. Col. Alexander Hamilton. This program is free and open to the public.

Moore will detail Lansing, Lafayette and Hamilton’s experiences at Yorktown, combining well-known historical accounts with Lansing’s own Revolutionary War pension service record.

Albright will expand about the ongoing efforts to document Col. Lansing, his Revolutionary War service, and his early years in Oriskany, where he helped found the woolen mill. Lansing was not only the younger brother of two early New York statesmen, but was also often in the shadows of the Founding Fathers during the Revolution.

In 1825, Lansing would be reunited with Lafayette when the general visited Oriskany as part of his Farewell Tour of the United States commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Nation. Gen. Lafayette’s visits have been recreated nationwide since last August. On June 9-10, 2025, the tour will reach the Mohawk Valley, including a stop at the Oriskany Museum on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at 9:30 am. A public ceremony will be held in Trinkaus Park followed by a ticketed breakfast at the Oriskany American Legion hosted by the Battle of Oriskany Historical Society.

The Oriskany Museum is located at 420 Utica Street in the Village of Oriskany just off State Route 69 between the cities of Utica and Rome. The museum collection focuses on the Battle of Oriskany, the Village of Oriskany, and the USS Oriskany CV/CVA-34. The museum is currently open Tuesdays from 9:00 am-noon, Thursdays from 5:00-7:00 pm, and Sundays from noon-3 pm. For details, please visit oriskanymuseum.com.
